The Miami Heat are betting on size, smarts, and international upside with their 2025 first-round pick.

With the 20th overall selection in the NBA Draft, the Heat selected Kasparas Jakučionis, a 6-foot-6 combo guard from Lithuania who just completed a standout freshman season at the University of Illinois. The 19-year-old made history as the first one-and-done freshman in school history and earned All-Big Ten honors in the process.

A Modern Fit

Jakučionis brings the kind of versatile skill set that fits neatly into Miami’s system. At 6’6″ with a reported 6’8″ wingspan, he offers size at either guard spot and has experience playing on and off the ball.

During his lone season at Illinois, he averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game, while starting all 33 games and helping lead the Illini to the NCAA tournament. His passing and rebounding numbers were especially impressive for a freshman, and his feel for the game was repeatedly praised by scouts and opposing coaches alike.

He’s known for his poise and decision-making in pick-and-roll scenarios, his willingness to move the ball, and his rebounding tenacity — traits that align closely with Miami’s development priorities.

Strengths and Room to Grow

Jakučionis has already proven he can operate as a primary or secondary ball-handler, and his high basketball IQ shows up in how he navigates offensive sets. He’s excellent at initiating action, finding open teammates, and attacking closeouts, and he’s not afraid to absorb contact when driving to the rim.

That said, there are some areas that will require attention. His 3.6 turnovers per game were among the highest in the Big Ten, and while he shot a solid 84.5% from the free throw line, his three-point shooting was streaky — hovering around 31.8% over the season and dipping in conference play.

His athleticism isn’t elite, and he may struggle initially to create separation against quicker NBA defenders. But those concerns are balanced by his positional size, strength, and passing ability — all of which give him a strong foundation.

A Classic Heat-Type Prospect

It’s no surprise that Miami was drawn to Jakučionis. He fits the Heat’s culture: under-the-radar, fundamentally sound, and tough-minded. He’s not a high-volume scorer or viral highlight machine, but he understands the game, plays hard, and has the tools to contribute in multiple ways.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra and Miami’s developmental staff have a strong track record with guards — and Jakučionis offers them a rare chance to mold a big, playmaking guard from day one. He may not step into a major role immediately, especially with veterans ahead of him, but he projects as a valuable contributor in the second unit with the upside to grow into more.

Looking Ahead

As Miami continues to build around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, adding young talent who can complement the core without needing the ball constantly is essential. Jakučionis checks that box.

The team will monitor his progress through Summer League and training camp, with an eye toward refining his shot and decision-making in NBA spacing. If he adjusts quickly, he could become a trusted option off the bench — and possibly even more.

For a team that prides itself on development and smart scouting, this pick feels like a seamless fit. The Heat didn’t chase flash. They found a guy who fits.
