The Miami Dolphins confirmed today they’ve traded veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Miami also sends a 2027 seventh-rounder to complete the deal—pending player physicals .
Ramsey, who joined Miami in 2023 and earned a 2023 Pro Bowl nod, announced the move himself in a video on X. The 30‑year‑old is headed to Pittsburgh, where he’ll receive a $1.5 million raise, pushing his 2025 salary to approximately $26.6 million .
Jonnu Smith, acquired by Miami during the 2024 offseason, was coming off a career-high season in which he earned his first Pro Bowl with 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. Pittsburgh reportedly signed him to a one-year, $12 million extension as part of this deal.
In return, the Dolphins reunite with Minkah Fitzpatrick, their former first-round pick from 2018. Now 28, Fitzpatrick has starred in Pittsburgh, earning five Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro selections. Miami hopes to plug a leadership and playmaking hole in their secondary with his return .
Miami GM Chris Grier, having previously indicated a willingness to move Ramsey this offseason, said today the trade “gave us the best chance to win now and in the future” . By finalizing this after June 1, the Dolphins are able to spread Ramsey’s cap hit over two seasons—a savvy financial move.
This transaction caps a whirlwind off-season in Pittsburgh, which has already added quarterback Aaron Rodgers, receiver DK Metcalf, and cornerback Darius Slay. With Ramsey and Smith now in tow for what could be Rodgers’ final season, the Steelers are clearly betting heavily on a Super Bowl push.
